Great Power
“And there came a day, a day unlike any other…”

Comic books are as mainstream today as they have ever been.  Hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent to bring five comic book adaptations to the big screen this summer.  Premium cable channels are developing new shows based on popular comics and graphic novels.  Big storylines, character deaths, and new publishing initiatives are making national headlines.  In other words…

It’s a great time to be reading comics.

Unfortunately, however, not everyone is doing so.  Some people are really into comic book movies, but still view the source material as nerdy or immature.  Others fondly remember the hobby they once enjoyed in their childhood, but have since moved on to pursue other interests.  Friends of mine have even confessed that they weren’t aware comics were still published today!  The truth is that quality comics are published every week and sold at a comic shop in your area, waiting to be discovered.

Everyone who has seen Spider-Man remembers what Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben said: “With great power comes great responsibility.”  Well, Great Power also comes with great opportunity, and that’s exactly why I started this blog.  I am the only one of my friends who reads comics, while they are all nerds in regard to different subject matter- video games, sports, music, etc.  I also love these things, as most guys my age do, but I believe my love of comics offers a unique opportunity to show my friends and others a world they know nothing about; An opportunity to share my passion and showcase what a great medium comic books are for storytelling.  Not all books are for everyone, but I strongly believe that everyone can find at least one comic they will enjoy.

This blog is for you if:

  • you like superhero movies
  • you want to know what comics are all about
  • you are wondering what comics you should be reading
  • you are my mom and want to know what I’m doing with my free time

I wish we could start off with some basics, but there are too many exciting things happening right now that we need to discuss!  Summer movie reviews are on the horizon, beginning with the recently released Green Lantern, but first:  In case you haven’t heard yet, Spider-Man is dying!  That’s right folks.  Coming out today, in a specially sealed bag, is Ultimate Spider-Man #160, in which the “Death of Spider-Man” storyline concludes.  I thought it would be a great opportunity to discuss superhero deaths.  Can they have a meaningful impact on storytelling, or are they just a bunch of hoopla created to get media attention (which Spidey’s death is getting at the national level)?  Look for that in a few days!  In the mean time, how do YOU feel about comics?  Do you fit any of my descriptions?
